Major Step Towards Emissions-Free Aviation
The eVTOL industry has taken a significant step towards emissions-free aviation. Until now, it was believed that eVTOLs (electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft) were only suitable for short air taxi flights, similar to a short helicopter journey. However, eVTOL manufacturer Joby has now demonstrated that their hydrogen-powered eVTOL can cover a distance of up to 846 km.
On June 24, 2024, Joby’s hydrogen-electric demonstration VTOL completed a flight over Marina, California, with water as the only emission.
The groundbreaking test flight, likely the first forward flight of an eVTOL powered by liquid hydrogen, was conducted using a modified Joby pre-production prototype battery-electric VTOL. This aircraft was equipped with a liquid hydrogen fuel tank and a fuel cell system, landing with 10% of its hydrogen fuel remaining.
JoeBen Bevirt, founder and CEO of Joby, said: “Flying is crucial for human progress, but we need to find ways to make it cleaner. Imagine being able to fly from San Francisco to San Diego (800 km), from Boston to Baltimore (650 km), or from Nashville to New Orleans (840 km) without needing to go to an airport and with no emissions except water. That world is closer than ever, and the progress we’ve made with the battery-electric version of our eVTOL gives us a strong foundation to make hydrogen-electric flying a reality.”
Joby Aviation, which plans to begin commercial operations of its battery-electric air taxi as early as 2025, has raised over $2 billion in funding. Investors include Toyota, Delta Air Lines, SK Telecom, Uber, and Baillie Gifford.
It is not yet known when we can expect the first commercial operations of Joby Aviation’s battery-electric air taxi in Europe.
